The inaugural event in 2005 saw 344 competitors represent 44 nations. BBC television is the host broadcaster. In 2005 the BBC broadcast a 90 minute post produced programme on BBC 2 Grandstand.

The flagship sports broadcaster is a major partner to the Event. Three major stake holders in Sport provide core funding for the Event UK Sport, Manchester City Council & North West Development Agency.
